POSITION: Research Officer

The Encyclopaedia Africana Project (EAP) Secretariat invites highly motivated and qualified individuals to apply for the position of Research Officer. Consequently, we seek a Research Officer who shares our vision and can support our research, publication, and knowledge management activities.

Job Summary

We currently seek a dynamic and results oriented Research Officer to join our Secretariat. This position places you at the heart of our research and publication efforts, where you will conduct high quality research, prepare technical reports, coordinate editorial activities, and manage research information. Your work will directly influence our ability to produce authoritative publications that showcase Africa’s heritage.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews and undertake research on assigned thematic areas, gathering and synthesising information from diverse sources.
  • Support editorial processes including fact checking, proofreading, copy editing, and reference verification to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Prepare research reports, policy briefs, concept notes, background papers, and technical documents for various audiences.
  • Assist in the development, editing, and review of publications, manuscripts, and other knowledge products to maintain high standards.
  • Assist in organising workshops, seminars, and stakeholder consultations to engage with experts and partners.
  • Prepare meeting briefs, minutes, presentations, and official correspondence to support effective communication.
  • Contribute to grant proposals, project reports, and institutional publications to secure funding and share impact.
  • Perform any other research and administrative duties assigned by the Director to support the Secretariat’s goals.

Qualification and Experience

To succeed in this role, you must bring a combination of academic qualifications, professional experience, and personal attributes. Specifically, we require:

  • Educational Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a closely related discipline from an accredited tertiary institution.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years of relevant experience including National Service in research, editorial work, publishing, communications, or a related field.
  • Research Writing: Demonstrated experience in research writing and document preparation, showcasing your ability to produce high quality outputs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

  • Research and Analytical Skills: Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking abilities for interpreting complex information.
  • Writing and Editing: Outstanding writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills for producing clear and compelling content.
  • Standards Knowledge: Strong knowledge of academic and professional writing standards and citation styles.
  • Organisational Skills: Excellent organisational and project coordination skills for managing multiple tasks.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all work.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) for documentation and reporting.
  • Additional Tools: Knowledge of reference management tools and research databases is an added advantage.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines consistently.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Professionalism: High ethical standards, professionalism, and confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
  • Interest in Africa: A strong interest in African history, culture, education, science, technology, and innovation.

Duty Station: This position is based at our Secretariat in Accra. Candidates must be willing to work in Accra.
