The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) invites international students to apply for its 2027 Research Internship Program. This prestigious opportunity allows talented undergraduates and master’s students to gain hands-on research experience in a world-class scientific environment. Internship Benefits

Selected interns receive comprehensive support throughout their placement.

The programme provides a daily allowance of 2,400 JPY, payable on working days.
Additionally, OIST covers one direct round-trip air ticket and offers furnished on-campus accommodation.
Interns also receive a free OIST shuttle bus pass and administrative support for visa acquisition, insurance procedures, and local registration.

Research Focus Areas

The OIST Research Intern program is available across numerous STEM disciplines. Students can explore opportunities in physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, mathematics, computational science, environmental science, ecological science, marine science, engineering, and medical sciences. Interns work under the supervision of professors, contributing directly to ongoing research activities.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be currently enrolled in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree or in any year of a master’s degree at universities, colleges, junior colleges, or vocational schools in Japan or overseas.
Recent graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree are also eligible to apply.
The internship is intended for those seeking more research experience and interested in joining OIST’s PhD Program later.
Current or graduated PhD students are not eligible.

Applications must be submitted online through the OIST application system. Required documents include a curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose (maximum 400 words), academic transcripts, an ID photo, and one to three letters of recommendation from academic referees.
