POSITION: Head of Research

Merban Capital is seeking a Head of Research to join our team in Accra. If you hold a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field, possess a CFA, ACCA, CA, or CIMA designation, and bring at least five years of experience in financial management or investment banking, this role offers the perfect platform to make a significant impact.

Your Mission

You will lead the firm’s investment research strategy, delivering actionable insights that support investment decisions, shape portfolio strategy, and enhance our competitive advantage. Your role spans portfolio company support, investment committee guidance, financial modeling, market analysis, and stakeholder relationship management. Your work will directly influence capital structures, liquidity management, merger and acquisition activities, and long term strategic planning across all portfolio companies.

Key Responsibilities

Your role spans strategic planning, financial analysis, investment support, and stakeholder engagement. Here is what you will tackle:

Strategic Planning & Portfolio Support

• You will conduct research and prepare reports that contribute to strategic planning and operational efficiency across all portfolio companies.
• Assisting in providing strategic advice to portfolio companies on implementing and executing financial strategies drives growth and profitability.
• Supporting portfolio companies in developing long term strategic plans, revenue budgeting processes, and identifying new business opportunities maximizes shareholder value.

Investment Committee & Research Models

• You will support the Investment Committee with data driven insights that inform critical decisions.
• Building and managing research models, forecasts, and valuation frameworks creates the analytical backbone for our investment process.
• Generating actionable investment ideas and recommendations turns analysis into action.

Market & Economic Analysis

• Continuously analyzing financial market trends, economic conditions, and regulatory changes provides insights and recommendations that align with business objectives.
• Staying ahead of market movements keeps our strategies relevant and responsive.

Capital Structuring & Liquidity Management

• Regularly assessing and recommending optimal capital structures for portfolio companies considers risk management, taxation, accounting principles, and regulatory requirements.
• Evaluating and recommending appropriate liquidity levels for each portfolio company ensures a balanced composition of cash, investments, and available banking facilities.

Financial Instruments & Negotiations

• Providing strategic advice on structuring financial instruments ensures cost effective and risk appropriate financing solutions.
• Assisting in advising portfolio companies on negotiations with financial service providers secures favorable terms on credit facilities, investment structures, and financial partnerships.

Mergers & Acquisitions Support

• Supporting the CEO in structuring and arranging acquisition financing as required for potential mergers and acquisitions expands our growth opportunities.
• Providing financial due diligence and valuation assessments on potential investment opportunities identifies risks and potential returns before we commit.

Stakeholder Relationships

• Maintaining and strengthening relationships with key financial stakeholders including banks, investors, regulators, and financial institutions gains insights into financial matters affecting portfolio companies.
• Collaborating with internal teams and external partners ensures alignment of financial strategies with overall business objectives.

What You Bring to the Role

We are looking for a candidate with the right education, professional designations, experience, and leadership capabilities. Here is what you need:

Education

• A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
• An MBA or Postgraduate degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.

Professional Designations

• ACCA, CA, CIMA, or CFA designation is required. These credentials demonstrate your technical mastery.

Experience

• A minimum of five years of experience in financial management, strategy consulting, investment banking, or corporate finance.
• Experience managing capital market transactions gives you a distinct advantage.
• Then, a proven track record in capital structuring, liquidity management, and strategic financial planning.
• A strong understanding of mergers and acquisitions, investment analysis, and financial risk management.

Skills & Competencies

• Excellent negotiation, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision making abilities.
• Lastly, proficiency in financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting tools.
