The University of Manchester seeks experienced professionals for two permanent research support positions. One role focuses on research impact within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The other concentrates on research development within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. Both opportunities offer competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits packages.

These positions suit candidates with backgrounds in Higher Education, research funding, innovation strategy, grant development, stakeholder engagement, and institutional research management. Successful applicants will join one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious research intensive universities.

Research Impact Officer: Driving Meaningful Change

This role supports researchers in identifying, developing, and communicating the wider benefits of their work. Academic research influences society, public policy, economic development, industry practices, environmental outcomes, and community wellbeing. The Research Impact Officer helps researchers understand these connections and articulate their contributions effectively.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to Faculty and University research and innovation strategies
  • Developing training materials, workshops, and guidance on research impact
  • Coordinating evidence collection and evaluation mechanisms
  • Supporting research proposals with institutional and non-technical content
  • Helping researchers identify societal, economic, behavioural, environmental, and policy impacts

The position sits within the FSE Research and Business Services team. It demands excellent written and oral communication skills alongside significant Higher Education experience.

Salary ranges from £37,694 to £46,049 pro rata depending on relevant experience. The application deadline falls on 7 September 2026.

Research Development Manager: Shaping Strategic Funding

This senior position drives research funding growth and strategic development within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. The Research Development Manager works closely with the Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, senior academic colleagues, and central University structures.

Core responsibilities encompass:

  • Building strategic relationships with research funders and gathering intelligence
  • Communicating funding opportunities to academic staff
  • Supporting large and complex grant proposals from development to submission
  • Driving strategic research initiatives across Faculties
  • Developing project plans and business cases

Candidates must hold a postgraduate or PhD level qualification in a relevant scientific subject. Substantial experience with complex grant proposals and a track record of increasing research funding remain essential requirements.

Salary ranges from £47,389 to £58,225 pro rata depending on relevant experience. The application deadline arrives earlier on 1 September 2026, with interviews scheduled for 17 September.

Which Role Matches Your Experience?

The Research Impact Officer position suits professionals experienced in research engagement, Higher Education administration, impact evidence, academic communications, and researcher training. This role emphasises helping researchers demonstrate their work’s broader significance.

Conversely, the Research Development Manager role fits candidates with strong backgrounds in research funding, complex grant proposals, funder relationships, funding intelligence, and strategic planning. This position carries more senior responsibilities and explicit requirements around postgraduate scientific education.

Employee Benefits and Work Environment

Both positions offer generous employer pension contributions, 29 days annual leave plus bank holidays and Christmas closure. Employees can access the Ride to Work scheme, electric vehicle car scheme, and flexible hybrid working arrangements.

The University actively welcomes candidates who bring diverse perspectives and approaches. It champions intellectual freedom, enabling community members to question received wisdom, express new ideas, and explore controversial topics within the law.
