African Nutrition Leadership Programme 2027

The African Nutrition Leadership Programme (ANLP) invites early and mid-career nutrition professionals to apply for its 2027 Leadership Development Programme. This intensive 10-day residential initiative, based at North-West University in South Africa, has been strengthening nutrition leadership across the continent since 2002.

Programme Overview

Nutrition challenges across Africa demand collaborative solutions. The ANLP brings together professionals from government, academia, civil society, UN agencies, and the private sector to build the leadership capacity needed for sustainable change. The programme has already trained numerous professionals from more than 40 African countries, creating a powerful pan-African network of change-makers.

What You Will Gain

The 10-day experience focuses on developing leadership capabilities that extend far beyond technical nutrition skills. Participants develop:

Self-management capabilities including self-awareness, leadership values, and the ability to balance competing demands
Social capabilities such as relationship-building, communication skills, and the ability to develop others
Work facilitation capabilities including strategic thinking, creative problem-solving, and the capacity to initiate and implement change

Who Should Apply

The programme targets early and mid-career nutrition professionals and related stakeholders working across Africa. Previous participants have represented government institutions, United Nations organisations, civil society, academia, the private sector, and independent consultancy. The selection process is competitive, with many applications received for each cohort, and each group typically accommodates around 30 participants.

Programme Impact

The ANLP emphasises “leading from where you stand,” empowering participants to influence policy, strengthen institutions, and implement sustainable interventions in their own contexts. Alumni have gone on to drive meaningful change, including supporting the launch of mandatory food fortification policies in various countries through focused change leadership interventions.
