Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027 | Call for Applications

Tech Policy Press is accepting applications for its 2027 fellowship cohort. This program supports independent reporting on technology and democracy. Since launching in 2023, it has trained twenty-five fellows across three cohorts. Past fellows represented eleven countries, writing on AI governance and digital rights. This year-long, part-time fellowship targets mid-career journalists and researchers. Public policy professionals with relevant expertise are equally welcome to apply.

Program Snapshot

  • Host Organization: Tech Policy Press
  • Format: Remote, part-time, independent contractor role
  • Duration: One year
  • Stipend: $10,000 per fellow
  • Application Deadline: September 24, 2026, 11:59 PM EDT

Focus Areas

  • Artificial intelligence governance and technology regulation
  • Digital rights and state-corporate power dynamics
  • Technology’s impact on democracy and society
  • Underrepresented regions in global tech policy discourse

About the Fellowship

This program supports original reporting and thoughtful policy analysis broadly. Fellows pursue independent projects exploring urgent technology and democracy questions. The program particularly welcomes work centering historically excluded communities and regions. Applicants should arrive with a clearly defined area of focus already.

Fellows join an international cohort offering regular feedback and exchange. Ongoing editorial guidance helps strengthen each fellow’s work throughout the year.

What Fellows Are Expected to Do

Fellows contribute analysis or reporting at least monthly throughout their term. They must attend a mandatory hour-long monthly cohort meeting regularly. Additionally, fellows meet monthly with Tech Policy Press’s editorial team directly. This meeting evaluates progress and discusses upcoming work and deadlines. Collaboration with other fellows and staff is expected where appropriate. Fellows must also disclose any potential conflicts of interest promptly.

Who Should Apply

Strong candidates show real expertise in tech policy or a specific region. Alternatively, broader knowledge of technology’s societal impact also qualifies. Mid-career journalists, researchers, and policy professionals are the primary target audience. All fellows work remotely as independent contractors throughout the program.

Required Materials

Applicants submit a current CV or resume alongside their application. A cover letter, capped at two pages, should outline their goals. Links to prior published work strengthen the overall application significantly. Two professional references complete the required submission materials.

How to Apply

Complete the official application form before the September deadline. Two optional information sessions are available via Zoom beforehand.

Conclusion

This fellowship offers a meaningful platform for journalists and researchers to pursue sustained, independent work on technology’s democratic implications. Its emphasis on underrepresented regions and communities sets it apart from many tech policy programs concentrated in major hubs. Given the collaborative cohort structure, applicants should clearly articulate their specific focus area and fit before the September 24 deadline.
