ESO Science Communication Internship 2026 in Germany (Fully Funded)

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) invites students and recent graduates worldwide to apply for its Science Communication Internship 2026. This fully funded opportunity places interns at ESO’s headquarters in Garching, Germany, where they work alongside professional science communicators sharing frontline astronomy research with global audiences. The internship runs for 6 months and offers comprehensive financial support.

Internship Benefits

Selected interns receive a complete support package to focus on their work. ESO provides a monthly allowance to cover living expenses, free accommodation at organisational facilities, and reimbursement for a return trip from the intern’s home country. The internship takes place entirely on-site in Garching, near Munich, with no remote or hybrid options available.

Key Responsibilities

Interns join ESO’s Department of Communication, supporting the creation of news releases, publications, blog posts, video scripts, exhibition panels, and other public engagement materials. You will help translate complex scientific research into accessible, engaging content for diverse audiences ranging from journalists to the general public.

Eligibility Requirements

ESO welcomes applicants from all countries, though preference goes to nationals of member states including Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and Chile. Ideal candidates have:

  • Previous experience in written science communication or journalism
  • Basic knowledge of astronomy
  • Fluency in written and oral English
  • A university degree in science, science communication, or science journalism (preferred)
  • Ability to translate research into simple concepts and write engagingly
  • Capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong teamwork skills and cultural awareness

Application Process

Submit your application online through the ESO recruitment portal at jobs.eso.org. Your complete application must include:

  • A motivation letter (1 page)
  • A CV (2 pages)
  • Two writing samples (each no more than 5 pages) demonstrating your ability to communicate science to wider audiences

The samples must be in English and can be previously unpublished work like blog posts, articles, or press releases. ESO does not sponsor visas, so you are responsible for securing your right to work in Germany.
