About the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program

The African Presidential Scholars Program is a fellowship programme that brings early-career teachers from African universities to the University of Michigan for an extended academic residency.

Requirements for the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program 2027

1. Be an Early Career Faculty Member

• Applicants must be early-career faculty members with less than ten years of teaching experience in the higher education system. Interested applicants are supposed to be teaching at a college or university in Africa now.

2. Hold an Ongoing Academic Position

• Applicants must be employed in a current job at a college or university in Africa. The initiative is targeted at academics making a direct contribution to higher education and research in African institutions.

3. Obtain Institutional Support

Applicants must demonstrate support from their home institution. This requires a letter of recommendation or endorsement from an acceptable senior academic official

4. Be Available for the Full Residency

• Successful applicants must be able to reside at the University of Michigan for roughly five months.

5. Have Not Previously Received UMAPS

• Applicants with considerable foreign experience (outside of Africa) will not be given preference.

The selected applicants will be entitled to the following benefits:

Fully Funded Residency

• The programme is based on a five-month residence at the University of Michigan, where scholars will spend four to six months. During this period, participants will be incorporated into the academic atmosphere of the university.
