Applications are open for the Carnegie China Fellowship 2027. The University of Maryland’s CUSP programme supports rising American China scholars. This one-year, non-residential fellowship funds original policy research. Fellows engage directly with the Washington policy community throughout.

About the Fellowship

Carnegie China backs scholars examining China’s global impact seriously. Fellows produce a policy-focused paper on their chosen research topic. The programme welcomes economists, lawyers, journalists, and other public intellectuals. Interdisciplinary and understudied topics are especially encouraged here.

What Fellows Receive

Fellows receive a $20,000 stipend for flexible professional use. Funds can buy out teaching time or cover research travel. Research assistant compensation is another permitted use of funds. Fellows must arrange their own health insurance separately.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must be US citizens holding a PhD or JD already. Current PhD or JD candidates cannot apply for this round. No institutional affiliation is required to submit an application. Partisan advocacy projects and rewritten dissertations are not eligible.

Required Materials

Applicants submit a five-page project proposal and a three-page CV. Two letters of reference must be emailed directly to CUSP. All materials must be submitted online, entirely in English.
