The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) invites scholars to apply for a Visiting Fellowship in Leiden. The fellowship supports research and academic exchange. Act quickly, because the deadline is 14 October 2026.

About the Fellowship

Fellows pursue a publication or research project of their own choice. They must work in Southeast Asian or Caribbean Studies. KITLV also aims to stimulate collaboration among scholars. Fellows must be based at the institute throughout their stay.

What Fellows Receive

• A return economy air or train fare to the Netherlands
• Accommodation costs in Leiden, up to €2,000 monthly, with proof of payment
• A monthly allowance for higher living costs, set case by case
• A formal invitation letter and help with a residence permit, if needed
• KITLV will not help fellows find housing.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must meet these requirements:

• A PhD in the social sciences or humanities by the fellowship start date
• Research in Southeast Asian or Caribbean Studies
• Interest in working in the Netherlands
• Readiness to be based at KITLV for the full period
• No tax residence in the Netherlands

An academic affiliation is not required. However, fellows need a steady income during the fellowship.
