Study in Japan: Institute of Science Tokyo MEXT Scholarship 2027 (Fully Funded)

The 2027 Institute of Science Tokyo MEXT Scholarship allows brilliant students to study science and engineering at a top Japanese research institution.

The Japanese government provides the scholarship through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). It is available to eligible international students studying for a graduate degree at the Institute of Science Tokyo, also known as Science Tokyo.

Science Tokyo recommends individuals to MEXT for scholarship consideration through a university recommendation process from eligible applicants of its International Graduate Program (A), called IGP(A).

The scholarship covers a monthly stipend of JPY 147,000 for master’s students and JPY 148,000 for doctoral students, exemption from enrolment and tuition costs, and a round-trip economy-class flight to Japan (if eligible). Funding is provided for the normal duration of the authorised degree program subject to MEXT regulations and academic criteria.

The Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) was created on October 1, 2024, through the merger of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

Requirements for the Institute of Science Tokyo MEXT Scholarship

1. Nationality

• Applicants must be nationals of a country that has diplomatic ties with Japan.

2. Age requirement

• Applicants must be aged 34 or under on 1 April 2027, the first year of the scholarship period

3. Academic performance

• Applicants must have achieved exceptional academic results, with a grade point average of at least 2.30 out of 3.00 in the most recently attended degree programme, as determined by the methodology stipulated by MEXT.

4. Educational qualifications

• Applicants must have graduated from a university in Japan or must have academic qualifications equal to or higher than those of a graduate of a university in Japan.
• They must also satisfy the specific academic entry requirements for the master’s or integrated doctorate programme they wish to enter.

5. Relevant field of study

• The particular field of study proposed must be the same or substantially linked to the applicant’s university major. It also needs to be a field in which the candidate can carry out research at Science Tokyo.

6. English language proficiency

• Interested applicants should have an adequate level of competence in English to meet the requirements of their selected programme and the scholarship.
• A recognised English language test result that is comparable to CEFR B2 or above is required.

7. Health and ability to study in Japan

• Also, applicants must be regarded as physically and psychologically fit to carry out their studies in Japan.

8. Availability to move to Japan

• Lastly, applicants should be able to travel to Japan and arrive there during the period designated by MEXT and Science Tokyo.
