Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship Program 2027/28

The Hertie School’s Centre for International Security in Berlin invites researchers to apply for the Stanton Nuclear Security Fellows Program. Fellows spend a year on independent, policy-relevant research. Applications close on 30 November 2026.

About the Fellowship

The program aims to develop the next generation of thought leaders on nuclear security. It supports interdisciplinary research that advances policy-relevant understanding. Fellows carry out a year of independent research in Berlin. A committee of Hertie faculty and outside nuclear security experts selects them.

The Stanton Foundation honors Frank Stanton, a former president of CBS. In 1954, President Eisenhower appointed him to a committee on U.S. survival after a nuclear attack.

What Fellows Receive

• A $110,000 stipend for postdoctoral researchers
• A $130,000 stipend for junior faculty
• A year at the Centre for International Security in Berlin
• The stipend is paid in euros. The conversion rate is fixed as of 5 November 2026.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must be one of the following:

• A postdoctoral researcher
• A tenure-track junior faculty member
• Junior faculty at a law school, or a faculty member whose terminal degree is in law
• Relevant experience is broadly defined. It includes nuclear policy, security, international relations, engineering, physics, and related fields.

Required Materials

• A current CV
• Two letters of recommendation
• A personal statement
• A project proposal
• The committee may also request official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all institutions attended since high school.
