Study in USA: Michigan State University Graduate Scholarship 2027 (Fully Funded)

The 2027 Michigan State University Graduate Scholarship offers a fantastic research opportunity for qualified graduates interested in ecology, bird conservation, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem services.

The Smith BIRDS Lab at Michigan State University (MSU) is looking for graduate students to join us in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028. Successful candidates may be granted a graduate assistantship that includes a tuition waiver, health insurance benefits, and a living stipend of $31,361 per year (subject to the official terms of the appointment).

Research focuses on the management of agricultural landscapes to increase food production and biodiversity. Students can engage in research projects that address songbird conservation, nest boxes on farms, prairie strips, and the ecosystem services that flow from wildlife-friendly farming methods.

Eligible Research Areas and Programmes for Michigan State University Graduate Scholarship

1. Ecosystem services and disservices of songbird nest boxes

One research area is the advantages and drawbacks of employing nest boxes to assist songbirds.
Ecological benefits of nest boxes and their potential unintended consequences.

2. Songbird nest box conservation results in farms

The lab is also looking for students interested in assessing the conservation value of songbird nest-box programs on agricultural land.
Possible research activities include field surveys, monitoring of nesting activity, collecting ecological data, analysing results, and assessing the impact of nest boxes on bird populations or related ecosystem functions.

3. Design and implementation of prairie strips

Another avenue of research is prairie strips, and the extent to which they can contribute to biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Prairie strips are patches of native prairie vegetation embedded in agricultural landscapes. The design and location can affect their ecological success.

Eligible degree levels

The Smith BIRDS Lab is recruiting for:

Master of Science (MS) degree: For students who desire advanced training and research experience in ecology or a related field.
Doctoral degree (PhD): For applicants who require broader research training and the opportunity to undertake advanced independent ecological research.
