POSITION: Director 

The Ghana Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) invites applications from suitably qualified Ghanaians for two senior leadership roles: Director of the CSIR Water Research Institute (WRI) and Director of the CSIR Institute of Industrial Research (IIR). If you meet the age limit of 55 years or less and want to serve a five year term with potential renewal, this role offers the perfect opportunity to drive national development through science and technology.

Role 1: Director of CSIR Water Research Institute (WRI)

You will lead an institute focused on water resources, quality, and management. Your research background must align with Biological, Physical, or Engineering Sciences.

Role 2: Director of CSIR Institute of Industrial Research (IIR)

You will lead an institute focused on industrial innovation and technology. Your research background must align with Engineering Sciences or Physical Sciences.

Your Mission

You will take responsibility for the day to day administration of your institute, serving as the Head under the broad guidance of the Director General. Your focus will span stakeholder linkages, research coordination, technology transfer, funding generation, strategic planning, and human resource management. Your ability to translate policy decisions into actionable programmes will determine your success.

Key Responsibilities

Your role spans institutional leadership, stakeholder engagement, research coordination, technology commercialization, funding generation, and people management. Here is what you will tackle:

Institutional Leadership

• You will serve as Head of the Institute, responsible for day to day administration under the Director General.
• Formulating and implementing science and technology plans keeps research aligned with national priorities.

Stakeholder Linkages

• You will establish effective linkages with relevant institutions and agencies within and outside CSIR.
• Interacting with top management in other institutions and agencies builds partnerships that amplify impact.

Research Coordination

• You will coordinate prioritized research of the institute, ensuring resources align with strategic goals.
• Providing services and inputs to determine research priorities keeps the institute focused on what matters most.

Technology Transfer & Commercialization

• You will promote the transfer of technology to industry, agricultural business, and other commercial partners.
• Commercializing research outputs turns scientific discoveries into economic value.

Funding Generation

• You will coordinate research funding initiatives, generating and attracting both internal and external funding.
• A steady stream of grants and contracts supports cutting edge research and staff development.

Human Resource Management

• You will take responsibility for the overall management and development of the institute’s human resource base.
• Inspiring research staff and supporting personnel creates a productive, motivated workforce.

What You Bring to the Role

We are looking for a candidate with the right qualifications, experience, research contributions, and leadership abilities. Here is what you need:

Qualifications

• For CSIR WRI: A PhD or equivalent in Biological, Physical, or Engineering Sciences from a recognized university or institute.
• For CSIR IIR: A PhD or equivalent in Engineering Sciences or Physical Sciences from a recognized university or institution.

Experience

• Not less than 12 years of experience in Research and Development (R&D).
• At least 5 years of successful experience in a management position.

Research Contribution

• Distinguished research contribution evidenced by scientific publications.
• Research output judged at least equivalent to that of a Principal Research Scientist or Associate Professor.

Leadership & Management

• Ability to organize, direct, and coordinate activities within a research institute for national development.
• Proven ability to inspire research staff and supporting personnel.
• Ability to translate policy decisions into actionable programmes.

Stakeholder & Funding Abilities

• Good knowledge of agencies in the relevant sectors.
• Ability to interact with top management in other institutions and agencies.
• Ability to generate and attract funding, both internally and externally, to support research activities.

Age Limit & Tenure

• Age Limit: Applicants must be 55 years or less.
• Tenure: Five years in the first instance, renewable subject to satisfactory performance.
