POSITION: Financial Controller
Marriott Hotels is seeking a Financial Controller to serve as the property’s strategic financial business leader. This position champions, develops, and implements property wide strategies. You will deliver products and services that meet or exceed the needs of both the brand’s target customers and property employees. Your financial expertise will enable successful implementation of the brand service strategy and brand initiatives. You will also maximize return on investment. Creating and executing a business plan aligned with the property and brand’s business strategy rounds out your core mission. You will focus on executing financial and accounting activities while delivering desirable financial results.
What You Need to Qualify
Education and Experience Requirements
- Pathway One: 4 year bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting or a related major plus 2 years of experience in finance, accounting, or a related professional area.
- Pathway Two: Master’s degree in Finance and Accounting or a related major with no work experience required.
Core Work Activities
Strategic Planning and Decision Making
You will analyze financial data and market trends to guide property strategy. You will analyze information, forecast sales against expenses, and create annual budget plans. Compiling information and monitoring actual sales against projections will occupy your regular workflow. You will develop means to improve profit by estimating costs and benefits and exploring new business opportunities. Analyzing differences between actual budget wages and forecasted wages will enable more efficient budget planning.
You will identify underlying principles and reasons by breaking down data into separate parts. You will think creatively and practically to develop, execute, and implement new business plans. Protecting and strengthening competitive advantage requires advocating for sound business and financial decision making. You will ensure a strong accounting and operational control environment to safeguard assets, improve operations, and boost profitability. Implementing a system of appropriate controls to manage business risks is non negotiable.
Leading Accounting Teams
You will utilize interpersonal and communication skills to lead, influence, and encourage others. You will advocate for sound financial and business decision making while demonstrating honesty and integrity. Leading by example sets the tone for your entire team.
You will communicate strategic goals, focus areas, and owner priorities to subordinates in clear, precise language. You will provide excellent leadership by assigning team members and other department managers clear accountability backed by appropriate authority. Holding staff accountable for successful performance completes your leadership duties.
Developing and Maintaining Finance and Accounting Goals
You will support property strategy from a finance and accounting perspective. You will submit reports in a timely manner, ensuring delivery deadlines never slip. Ensuring that profits and losses are documented accurately is critical. You will achieve and exceed goals including performance targets, budget objectives, and team milestones. You will ensure appropriate corrections are made to audit results when necessary. Reviewing audit issues to ensure accuracy rounds out this responsibility.
Managing Projects and Policies
You will monitor all applicable taxes, ensuring that the property collects, accrues, and stays current on each. Moreover, you will generate and provide accurate, timely results through reports, presentations, and other formats. You will ensure compliance with standard and local operating procedures. Overseeing internal, external, and regulatory audit processes is essential. You will ensure that all Standard Operating Procedures receive full compliance. You will ensure the P&L shows accuracy, with costs properly matched to revenue and recorded in the proper accounts.
Anticipating and Delivering on Stakeholder Needs
You will understand and meet the needs of key stakeholders including owners, corporate leaders, and guests. You will understand owners’ perspectives and return on investment expectations. Anticipating and addressing owner needs while involving ownership in key decisions builds trust.
You will leverage strong functional leadership and communication skills to influence the executive team and property strategies. Then, you will advise the General Manager and executive committee on existing and evolving operating and financial issues. Facilitating critique meetings to review information with the management team is required. Attending owners’ meetings to provide context and explanation for financial results is essential. You will communicate financial concepts in a clear, persuasive manner that drives desired behaviors.
Managing Human Resource Activities
You will ensure team members receive cross training to support successful daily operations. Also, you will administer property policies fairly and consistently. Ensuring new hires participate in the department’s orientation program is your responsibility. You will ensure new hires receive appropriate training to perform their jobs successfully. Creating development plans based on individual strengths, development needs, career aspirations, and abilities completes your HR duties.
