POSITION: Data Engineer
GBfoods is seeking a Data Engineer to join our team, reporting to the Commercial Data Manager. If you possess strong proficiency in Python and SQL, hands on experience with cloud data platforms, and a passion for data governance and quality, this role offers the opportunity to build the data backbone for a leading FMCG company operating across 24 African countries.

Your Mission
You will take ownership of designing, building, and managing scalable data pipelines and services that support strategic business units across the company. Your work will ensure data remains integrated, reliable, and governed, enabling analytics, BI, and AI initiatives. Working cross functionally with technical teams and business stakeholders, you will help create a consistent, business focused data foundation that drives decision making, innovation, and advanced analytics at the Group level.
Key Responsibilities
Your role spans data engineering, data modeling, governance, operations, and future oriented ways of working. Here is what you will tackle:
Group Data Engineering & Integration
- You will design, build, and maintain end to end data pipelines that ingest, transform, and serve data from multiple internal and external sources across the Group.
- Contributing to the development and operation of Group data lake and data warehouse layers ensures consistency, scalability, and reusability across Strategic Business Units.
- Integrating heterogeneous data domains including commercial, marketing, consumer, financial, and operational data into a coherent, well structured data environment creates a single source of truth.
Data Modeling & Business Enablement
- You will design and maintain data models and semantic layers that translate raw data into business ready structures for analytics, BI, and AI use cases.
- Working closely with analytics and business teams helps you understand key questions and translate them into robust data structures.
- Ensuring that data remains accessible, understandable, and usable by downstream consumers empowers better decision making across the organization.
Data Governance & Quality
- You will implement and enforce Group data governance standards including data cataloguing and documentation, lineage and traceability, access control and security rules, and PII handling and masking policies.
- Proactively monitoring and improving data quality, reliability, and freshness builds trust in Group data assets.
Operations & Continuous Improvement
- You will monitor data pipelines, identify issues proactively, and ensure reliable and performant data delivery.
- Applying modern data engineering best practices such as version control, automated testing, monitoring, and documentation keeps our practices current.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of Group data standards, patterns, and tooling in collaboration with Data Architecture and IT teams drives ongoing excellence.
AI Enabled & Future Oriented Ways of Working
- You will leverage AI assisted development tools including LLMs, automation, and intelligent documentation to accelerate development, improve quality, and increase efficiency.
- Actively exploring new approaches to data engineering that align with the Group’s mid to long term digital and AI ambitions keeps us ahead of the curve.
What You Bring to the Role
We are looking for a candidate with the right qualifications, experience, and mindset. Here is what you need:
Education & Experience
- A minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
- At least five years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or BI related roles.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Hands on experience with cloud data platforms such as Azure data services, Snowflake, Big Query, or similar.
- Solid understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data warehouse and lakehouse concepts.
- Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow or equivalent.
- Familiarity with version control and collaborative development using Git, along with basic CI/CD principles for data pipelines.
- Knowledge of data quality and validation concepts.
- Exposure to distributed processing technologies such as Spark or Databricks gives you a plus.
