In a passionate appeal to Ghanaians, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed, has criticised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserting that his actions contradict Islamic teachings.
Speaking at the campaign launch and health walk in the Asawase constituency on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Mohammed emphasised that voting decisions should be based on candidates’ capabilities and commitment, not their religious affiliations.
“Islam teaches us not to lie, yet Dr. Bawumia, who claims to be a committed Muslim, has consistently engaged in falsehoods,” Mohammed stated, urging Ghanaians to support John Dramani Mahama and disregard Bawumia’s appeal to Muslim voters based on religious grounds.
Mohammed praised Asawase MP Muntaka Muhammad for his principles and significant contributions to the Muslim community, including securing a suitable place for Friday prayers in Parliament. He contrasted Muntaka’s proactive efforts with Bawumia’s silence on key issues affecting Muslims, such as the denial of rights to Muslim students and the ongoing conflict in Palestine.
“Hon. Muntaka galvanised us when Muslim students were denied their basic rights. He led us to meet with the Minister of Education and even the Vice President, yet Dr. Bawumia remained silent,” Mohammed remarked.
Highlighting former President Mahama’s clear support for the Palestinian cause, Mohammed contrasted it with President Nana Akufo-Addo’s pro-Israel stance. He argued that Mahama’s position demonstrates a commitment to justice and human rights.
“President Mahama has shown unwavering support for the Palestinian people, whereas President Nana Addo has openly aligned with Israel. This is a clear indication of where their loyalties lie,” Mohammed stated.
Mohammed called on Ghanaians to vote for Muntaka and Mahama to secure a majority in Parliament and “reset” the country. Emphasising the collective responsibility, he urged voters to support Muntaka for the broader goal of strengthening the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“So, I am telling you that it is our collective responsibility to ensure that Hon. Muntaka Muhammad comes back to Parliament. You don’t necessarily need to like him to be able to vote for him. You don’t necessarily need to adore him to be able to vote for him. But you are voting for him because of NDC. You are voting for him because you want President Mahama to have a majority to reset this country.”
